Thomas Merton once wrote, ". . . union with God is not a matter of withdrawal and special experiences, so much as it is a question of love, and the love of other men is necessary if we are to grow without illusions in the authentic love of God." (From Contemplation in a World of Action.) This course examines three people whose lives demonstrate that love of God and love of others go hand-in-hand. Edith Stein, a Jewish convert who became a Roman Catholic nun, died at Auschwitz. Henri Nouwen, a Roman Catholic priest whose writings have had a world-wide influence, found great peace and happiness in caring for people with developmental disabilities. Wendell Berry, a novelist, poet, essayist, English professor, and farmer, has spent a lifetime combining the love of God, humanity, and the Earth. Each of these people wrestled with the question of love, and can help us and inspire us in our wrestling with the same questions.
