The Gospel Infancy Narratives: Fact or Folklore?

The account of Jesus’ birth is found in two places in the Bible: the opening chapters of Matthew and Luke. But although these texts are regarded as canonical, and therefore authoritative for believers, biblical scholars increasingly question their claims. As one would expect, doubt concerning the historicity of the events surrounding Jesus’ birth has generated a heated debate. Under the titles listed below, this course of lectures will examine some of the issues raised by theologians:
  1. The First Christmas: A Record of Historical Events?
  2. The Legends of the Jews: A Possible Background?
  3. The Virginal Conception: The Foundation of Faith?
