In their 2007 publication, The First Christmas, Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan have offered another superbly scholarly, yet thoroughly accessible study of the historical, literary and theological context of the birth narratives found in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Consistent with their earlier examinations of the Biblical text, their efforts extend well beyond the task of interpretive integrity and into the rich possibilities of profound new meaning. Through our three week study of this book during Advent of 2008, we may well find ourselves awakening to a very different experience of the celebration of the birth of Jesus.
