ONLINE: Book Club Express: Forty-Five Minute Conversation Sprints for Mind and Heart

Are you looking for a break from endless zoom meetings or from sanitizing your countertops and door knobs for the hundredth time? Or maybe you are just looking for something new to read and some friends to discuss things with. If so, please join Patty Speier, for this online book club that will meet for forty-five minutes each Wednesday of the week at 11:15am.

In light of current events, our next book will be Jesus and the Disinherited, by the theologian and mystic, Howard Thurman. As many of you know Thurman was Martin Luther King Jr.’s mentor and a close friend of his father. It has been said the MLK traveled with a copy of Jesus and the Disinherited in his pocket, especially while marching for peace and justice. This book is Thurman’s exploration of the question, “Why is it that Christianity seems impotent to deal radically, and therefore effectively, with the issues of discrimination and injustice on the basis of race, religion and national origin?” Interestingly for us in Austin, Thurman presented the comprehensive work on which this book is based at a lecture in Austin at what was then Samuel Huston College in April of 1948.

Jesus and the Disinherited provides meaning and direction for all people--regardless of race, religion or national origin-- living in times of disorder and upheaval and who wish to do their part in bringing about an equitable society. In Thurman’s words, it is a book for all who want to live a life, “that refuses to give into “fear, hypocrisy, and hatred, the three hounds of hell that track the trail of the disinherited.”
